  5. Are Whitening Toothpastes Really Effective?

Having white and shiny teeth is everyones dream and the first and most simple and inexpensive method to achieve this dream is whitening toothpastes.

Abrasives, peroxide and some enzymes have been added to toothpastes as bleaching agents. Calcium carbonate, dicalcium phosphate dihydrate, alumina, silica, sodium bicarbonate abrasive particles we read in the toothpaste contents. Abrasive particles are substances that must be present in toothpastes to remove food residue and dental plaque. The substances that whiten without abrasion are peroxide, citrate, pyrophosphate, hexametaphosphate, surfactant and enzymes. In addition, hydroxyapatite added to the toothpastes collapses into the pits on the tooth enamel, making the teeth look whiter and brighter.

Whitening toothpastes can only affect external coloring. It has no effect on internal coloring.

Today, most of the toothpastes introduced as whitening toothpaste show abrasive effect and whiten teeth. Brushing long-lasting teeth with these toothpastes containing large particles of abrasives will erode tooth enamel and make it more vulnerable to coloration. As a result, teeth with tapered enamel layer become sensitive and appear more yellow, unlike our target.

Whitening toothpastes can be used no more than once a day. This application should be used in one of the daytime brushing procedures, not before bedtime.

It should not be forgotten that our tooth color is hereditary and special for you like hair and skin color and be happy with what we have. However, if you want to have whiter teeth, the whitening process that your dentist will apply is the most effective and harmless method.
